Movements for Balance & Strength
Course Description

Movements for Balance & Strength is an exercise program precisely designed to reduce the risk of falling among seniors. Specific balance movements are coupled with core strengthening exercises to improve balance and increase strength in areas of the body that work to keep people on their feet. Movements are simple so that everyone, regardless of fitness level, can be successful. Balance & Mobility Specialist, Lori Whittle MPH, will teach prospective leaders the theory behind these specific movements and then guide them through the practice of Movements for Balance & Strength. Prospective leaders will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to lead a balance and strength exercise class for seniors.

Training in two levels of Movements for Balance & Strength is available:

  • Balance Essentials, Level 1, is designed for people who are beginning to be concerned about their balance. Participants are relatively active, community-dwelling seniors or people in residential independent living situations.

  • For People With Mobility Limitations is designed for seniors whose mobility has become an issue because of a medical condition, memory impairment, or significant fear of falling. Participants include seniors in adult daycare, assisted living, or other day programs. Participants often use walkers or canes.

The Movements for Balance & Strength train-the-trainer course is condensed into three sessions. The first session includes theory and participation in a Movements for Balance & Strength class taught by Lori Whittle. In the second session, held one week later, participants will practice their skills. Participants are expected to use the week between classes to practice skills needed to lead a Movements for Balance & Strength class.  Movements for Balance & Strength DVDs are available to help participants with skills practice. In the third session, held one-two months later, a participant will lead a complete Movements for Balance & Strength class.  Upon demonstration of necessary skills, the participant will be certified as a Movements for Balance & Strength instructor
